Who We Are

Need help matching the face to the personality? This should provide an adequate introduction to the friendly people of Literacy Services.

Kathy Knudsen, Literacy Coordinator

I have lived in Monrovia for over thirty years and am proud to call this community home.  As the new Literacy Coordinator for the Monrovia Public Library, I am especially proud of the opportunities the Literacy Services program affords our friends and neighbors to improve their literacy skills.  This program can be the bridge between the literate and non literate world for many of our community members.  It is also a wonderful opportunity for our tutors to serve others by providing one-to-one instruction in a positive nurturing environment.  Sometimes ending the family cycle of illiteracy provides stepping stones to a better quality of life, improved self esteem, awareness and knowledge.

I have worked in the field of education in both the Monrovia Unified School District and the Mountain View School District in the City of El Monte.  Both jobs, as a teacher and administrator, have fostered my love of learning and helping others. I served on the Library Board in the City of Monrovia for over 10 years and was so impressed by the way in which city members came together to support the process of building a new library.   I know that the city takes great pride in our beautiful, new building.

All of us can increase our knowledge and understanding through the process of being a life long learner.  We can give back to our community through serving others.  Thank you for being part of our program and if you know of others that might benefit from tutoring or enjoy serving by being a tutor, please contact me at the Literacy Services office.

We would like to thank our friendly volunteer graphic designer, May Almero-Cruz, for the hours of work she put into making our blog a prettier place to be. You can visit her website by going to http://mayalmerocruz.com/ .
